Extract from a letter from the Secretary to the Government of Bengal, to the Officiating Secretary to the Government of Hong Kong, dated the 22nd December 1856.
Sir,
I am directed to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated the 9th December 1856.
Government Affairs, Hong Kong, 13th October 1858.
On the 11th instant the enclosed letter was received from the Government of India announcing the resolution of His Lordship the Governor General with regard to the continuance of Transportation to the Straits Settlements.
Thus placed in a position of difficulty I consulted the Honourable Sir Henry Labouchere, M.P., Secretary of State for the Colonies, with regard to the three Houses of Mr. Studson condemned as a nuisance by the Report of the Acting Surveyor General in September 1856.
